As a Senior Reinsurance Underwriter at Navigators Re, a brand of The Hartford, your primary role will be managing and growing an existing portfolio within Latin America and the Caribbean by applying continued diligent pricing and risk/layer selection to ensure that the portfolio meets or beats the target plan composite ratios. At the same time, you will seek diversification and align with the group’s risk appetite.

You will collaborate with our underwriting and our actuarial team to ensure the continued support of our cedant and broker partners. Subject business to this portfolio entails indigenous and global cedents that operate within Latin America and the Caribbean. In this role, you will also act as a coach and mentor, to other staff on the team.

Responsibilities:

  • Growing and managing a profitable portfolio of new and renewal business accounts.

  • Developing and maintaining existing broker and cedant relationships and provide excellent service and meet time requirements for proposals, authorizations, and special acceptances.

  • Marketing responsibilities throughout Latin America and the Caribbean as applicable.

  • Analyzes accounts for potential action at renewal and communicate efficiently with Brokers/Cedants for win/win solutions.

  • Expertly applying all applicable underwriting guidelines when making account decisions demonstrated with quality and compliance scores.

  • Supporting, creating, driving, and executing on strategies for new and/or renewal accounts (prospective book management, executes on guidance for pricing and retention).

  • Coach and mentor team members, providing support to the group with referrals and training in treaty reinsurance underwriting.

  • Utilize established aggregation controls to ensure that portfolio exposures do not exceed established parameters.

  • Responsible for consistently raising the bar in driving & executing critical initiatives within the territory.

  • Responsible for participating in new underwriter onboarding programs; May be responsible, in conjunction with the individual's manager, for building and implementing onboarding plans, identifying key skill gaps, and creating individualized development plans to maximize new underwriter success over time

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience required in treaty reinsurance for Latin America and the Caribbean.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English & Spanish is required with strong phone presence and ability to influence. Portuguese is a plus.

  • An in-depth understanding of Property & Casualty insurance / reinsurance.

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.

  • STEM or Actuarial background is a plus.

  • The ability to communicate well internally / externally is essential.

  • Ability to develop great relationships with brokers and cedants.

  • Knowing deals that are placed in the market.

  • Strong working knowledge using AIR or RMS models for pricing / modeling property catastrophe exposed treaties in Latin America and Caribbean.

  • Ability to provide reinsurance treaty structure alternatives upon review of a client’s portfolio and local capital and retention requirements of the client’s market.

  • Superior technical knowledge and sound decision-making and analytical skills.

  • Must be self-motivated, organized, and able to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and team-oriented environment.

  • Strong relationship building skills.

  • Ability to source and drive new business.

  • Excellent sales and negotiation skills.

  • Deep working knowledge in Excel.

  • Some knowledge in the use of SQL, Python, Tableau and Power BI is a plus.

  • Some travel required throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$185,920 - $278,880
