What We're Looking For:

We’re looking for a collaborative Section Manager to lead our growing highway transportation design group. The position may be located in HNTB’s downtown Kansas City, MO and/or Overland Park, KS office. This individual will recruit, train, and promote staff in their sections, establish a team culture focused on excellence, deliver 4for4 on all projects and assignments, and mentor staff through project assignments, career development discussions, and professional development/training opportunities. Experience managing projects with local clients (MoDOT, KDOT, KTA) is a plus!

This individual will be responsible for leading a section of professionals in the highway group including managing staffing schedules and assignments to ensure clients and projects are provided the proper resources and the team members are given the right opportunities to learn and grow in their careers. Communication and innovation will be required to coordinate with other Section Managers across all five of our Central States offices. The number of employees directly and indirectly supervised by the Section Manager is at least 5 but typically 7 - 10 or more.

Key Activities:

  • Establish and foster a team culture focused on excellence, collaboration, and support.

  • Manage, mentor and coach your team in the transportation section to develop their careers.

  • Anticipate, identify, and assign the right staffing opportunities through project delivery and coordination with the group’s operations manager, other sections, departments, and office locations.

  • Recruit, interview and hire top talent to HNTB.

  • Actively support and serve as a career champion to staff through the Career Planning & Development (CPD) process and be present in the office for on-the-job coaching and mentoring.

  • Collaborate with the other sections within the highway group and office on identifying how to grow, recognize, and improve the section through strategic planning.

  • Support client service leaders, project managers, and pursuit champions to implement pursuit and win-to-work activities.

  • Depending upon the scope and size of a project, may serve as a project manager, deputy project manager or task lead delivering quality work, on time, on budget, to the client’s satisfaction.

What You'll Do:

  • Develops, monitors and manages the section's operating budget in support of the group or office operating budget and forecast updates.

  • Responsible for the management, growth and professional development of discipline-specific engineering section. Coordinates section activities establishes priorities and staff to jobs. Ensures staff development, mentoring and training needs are being met. Collaborates with other Sections and Departments within the office on work-sharing needs and opportunities.

  • Supports the implementation of the firm's strategic plan and HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA) process on project pursuits in the Section and office, including development of Section-level strategic planning strategies.

  • Supports the implementation of the firm's contracting (SCA) process through project delivery and contracting activities including scope, work plan and fee reviews for all contracting activities impacting the Section.

  • Supports the implementation of the firm's project delivery (SDA) process including Work Planning, Monthly Project Reviews and other project performance methods to ensure quality work, on time, on schedule, to the client's satisfaction.

  • Assists in marketing responsibilities, including client discovery, proposal generation, interviews, and win-to-work activities

  • Maintains client contacts to ensure client satisfaction

  • Recruits, hires, develops and retains section staff, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.

  • Manages assigned project management activities (project scope, schedule, budget and quality management) and performs technical discipline tasks including research, reports, design, specifications and plan preparation.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 8 years of practical experience including 2 years of leadership experience.

What We Prefer:

  • 10+ years practical experience

  • 2+ years supervisory experience

  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification
