THE OPPORTUNITY

Netflix seeks an experienced Copyright Counsel to evaluate and advise on the chain of title in connection with the acquisition of rights to the intellectual property that underlies Netflix’s content. This unique and exciting role sits on the Copyright Team which is part of the larger Intellectual Property Team. On the IP Team, it is our mission to support creative excellence by managing the risks associated with Netflix’s content from acquisition through distribution, and beyond. This role reports to the Director, Copyright, Intellectual Property, and is based in Los Angeles.

As a member of the Copyright Team, you will support vital components of our intellectual property practice, and be an integral resource for Netflix’s business and creative teams. Your determinations directly impact the viability and valuation of potential acquisitions. Your rights experience allows you to make determinations around legal risk as it relates to ownership, attachments, and obligations. Your copyright expertise allows you to confidently advise on material issues including termination, reversion, and public domain. Your expert eye for detail and exceptional organizational talents mean that you excel at quickly piecing together the jigsaw puzzle of a complex rights situation. You are comfortable working with incomplete information and ambiguous contractual terms. You are adept at pragmatically analyzing risk, and you confidently communicate across all levels of the business. You are passionate about the entertainment industry and excited to learn more about the business. You think outside the box, challenge long-standing assumptions, and look for opportunities to innovate. Your bias is toward collaboration, responsiveness to change, feedback, and new ideas. Responsibilities:

  • Conduct chain of title analysis and provide concise and pragmatic advice regarding complex rights acquisitions and grants, as well as copyright reports, registrations, and recordations

  • Prepare and present a detailed chain of title memos and analysis to business and creative teams

  • Keep apprised of domestic and international copyright developments and adjust Netflix’s practices and approaches accordingly

  • Implement efficient workflows for chain of title review

  • Train internal attorneys and staff about the chain of title and copyright transfer issues

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with international counsel and outside vendors

Requirements:

  • JD degree and 6+ years of transactional copyright experience in the media industry, including chain of title review

  • Deep understanding of U.S. copyright law as it relates to ownership and transfers

  • Experience with the development and production process for scripted filmed entertainment

  • Unparalleled organizational skills and unwavering attention to detail

  • Clear, concise communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills, and creative thinking

  • Interest in and/or experience with the chain of title adjacent legal issues, such as bankruptcy, estate planning, and tax

  • Tech­-savvy, including proficiency with cloud­-based document and database systems

  • Ability to work proactively, independently, and reliably on multiple projects under tight time frames in a fast­-paced environment

Our compensation structure consists solely of an annual salary; we do not have bonuses. You choose each year how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. To determine your personal top-of-market compensation, we rely on market indicators and consider your specific job family, background, skills, and experience to determine your compensation in the market range. The range for this role is $250,000 - $530,000.

We also offer paid leave of absence programs. Full-time hourly employees accrue 35 days annually for paid time off to be used for vacation, holidays, and sick paid time off.
