Overview

The Associate Director of Outreach and Public Engagement is dedicated to serving and supporting Shreiber School of Veterinary Medicine, Rowan University, and members of the New Jersey public community through externally-facing educational programming that connects animals and people. This position focuses on P-12 veterinary and STEM education programming and includes oversight of programming at our PAWS Farm Educational Center and all other externally delivered community- based educational programs. PAWS Farm is a 10-acre historic small farm located in Mount Laurel, New Jersey, with several small farm animal outbuildings and enclosures, a community garden, and educational buildings for outreach programming for various community groups, including summer camps and school field trips.

Position

Reporting to the Public Relations & Communications Manager, the Associate Director will provide supervision, coordination, and administrative direction to ensure all external programs meet health, safety and regulatory standards and offer quality youth development educational experiences.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and facilitates programs including but not limited to school field trips, summer camps, and other educational programming; engages with all guests during events/ programming.

  • Establishes operational procedures and standards for all programmatic functions and strives for the highest standards in serving the community.

  • Models and upholds best practices and internal policies to ensure health and safety standards for all participants and students.

  • Provides a welcoming and stimulating learning environment for all visitors, participants, and students; advances educational programs to meet evolving programmatic and community needs, focusing on serving diverse audiences.

  • Manages purposeful and impactful partnerships with pre-K to elementary schools, charter systems, and local communities.

  • Monitors and maintains program calendar to ensure proper staffing of part time instructors, faculty, and veterinary students.

  • Instructs established educational programing as identified/needed to support the established plan of work.

  • Works in conjunction with the administration to form fundraising strategies that includes cultivating supporters; works with the Coordinator for Grants and Sponsored Programs for SSVM on grant applications to secure funding for ongoing/expanding programming efforts.

  • Works with the Public Relations and Communications Manager for SSVM to produce key communications and promotional materials; enhances the website to include education-related curriculum and programs that serve as a meaningful extension of the Educational Center and SSVM.

  • Coordinates identified administrative aspects of outreach initiatives including ordering and inventory of supplies.

  • Identifies needs for new programming as appropriate, using feedback gathered by surveys distributed to visiting schools and programs.

  • Proposes and develops the budget for assigned programs based on established financial guidelines and/or procedures and allocates budget amounts for assigned programs.

  • Develops, implements, and monitors the budget for assigned outreach programs.

  • Supervise and manage the work of direct reports and staff responsible for the delivery of programs.

  • Management of PAWS Farm operations. Works with animal caretakers and SSVM clinical faculty and staff to coordinate husbandry and medical care of facility animals.

  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required for education programming, special events or meetings.

  • The position may require occasional travel for training, conferences and visiting other campuses of the university.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field; master’s degree preferred.

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience working in a scientific or veterinary medicine field and in an educational and/or community environment or related field preferred; P-12 strongly preferred

  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a STEM-related educational setting strongly preferred. Demonstrated experience working with P-12 populations is strongly preferred. Demonstrated familiarity with the veterinary profession preferred.

  • Collaborative, visionary, and passionate about producing and delivering educational experiences for young children and families of all backgrounds; commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Strong organizational, written, and verbal communication skills including the ability to interact with various groups.

  • Demonstrated experience in facilitation, project management (budgeting and scheduling) as well as working successfully in a team environment.
