New York University Director, Peer Support Training in New York, New York

The NYU McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research (http://mcsilver.nyu.edu/) is committed to creating new knowledge about the root causes of poverty, developing evidence-based interventions to address its consequences, and rapidly translating research findings into action through policy and best practices.

We are looking to hire a talented and motivated individual to serve as Director of Peer Support Training. The Director will oversee the work of the Peer Support Services Technical Assistance Center (PeerTAC) in collaboration with our partners at Rutgers Academy for Peer Services. PeerTAC provides training, technical assistance, and ongoing support to mental health organizations in the successful inclusion of Peer Support Services across the lifespan. PeerTAC is a partnership between NYU McSilver and Rutgers Academy for Peer Services who both co-direct the center. Reporting to the Education and Innovation Officer, the Director will collaborate closely with our PeerTAC partners in overseeing the family and youth peer scope of projects, ensuring deliverables are met, and planning future projects. The ideal candidate will have experience as a family peer advocate or a youth peer advocate managing teams and projects, knowledge of the mental health system, exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, strong organizational skills, and can work collaboratively with a diverse and high-energy team.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, conduct, and supervise the delivery of training and technical assistance to NYS Mental Health Providers. Technical assistance activities include but are not limited to, in-person and virtual workshops, webinars/presentations, and individual coaching meetings/consultation calls.

  • Work alongside and collaboratively with partner organizations, peer-run organizations, and peers to develop and revise new and existing training, resources, and tools.

  • Liaise with leaders on related local, regional, state, and federal initiatives as required.

  • Identify and operationalize key training and technical assistance strategies.

  • Participate in strategic planning for the growth and direction of the center.

  • Participate and present at regional and national conferences and forums on behalf of PeerTAC

  • Disseminate outcomes and lessons learned to stakeholders via regular communications (reports, newsletters, curriculum, technical assistance briefs, research papers, etc.)

  • Communicate and provide resources to funders and stakeholders.

  • Provide oversight and supervision of staff and projects.

  • Identify, create, and support professional development opportunities for staff.

  • State and local travel for required activities, trainings, and meetings; some national travel may be needed

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a human services field AND three years experience as a professional peer advocate or service provider in a mental health-related field. OR A Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in a human services field AND two years of experience as a professional peer advocate or service provider in a mental health-related field. OR Six years of experience as a professional peer advocate or service provider in a mental health-related field.

  • Preference may be given to candidates who have lived experience, and a willingness to self-identify, navigating the children’s mental health system for themselves or as a parent/caregiver of a child receiving services.

  • Demonstrated experience managing and supervising a team, managing a program or major projects, and working with state or local government entities.

  • Knowledge of the New York State mental health service system preferred

  • Credentialed or Certified as a Youth Peer/Peer or Family Peer preferred or meets requirements for the credential/certification

  • Ability to exhibit a nonjudgmental approach, effective listening, good eye contact, and positive interactions

  • Awareness of the importance of recovery/resilience in living with mental health challenges.

  • Familiar with best practices and research on mental health issues, particularly as it relates to peer support programs and services.

  • Demonstrative effectiveness in supervising and supporting individuals with lived experience.

  • Ability to relate effectively with individuals, community members, and staff of diverse backgrounds, personalities, and communication styles.

  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including communicating by videoconference, phone, and/or in person with community members and organizational partners.

  • Demonstrated growth mindset and capacity to pivot and reprioritize in a fast-paced environment.

  • Demonstrates a solution-oriented and collaborative work style.

  • Ability to thrive in both a collaborative team environment and a self-motivated work environment.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Knowledge of Google Suite applications is helpful.

  • Proficiency in or capability to learn new software, including Zoom, Adobe Acrobat, and other tools used by the organization.

  • Hybrid position requiring a minimum of 3 days on-site in either our Albany or NYC office. Ability to travel to the NYC office periodically if in Albany.

  • Ability to travel across the state and out of state as needed.

Salary

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the salary range for this position is $100,000 - $120,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as specific funding and the terms of the contract when extending an offer.

  • NYU McSilver is currently operating on a hybrid schedule of 3 days a week in person.

  • This is a grant-funded position with the opportunity for ongoing renewal reviewed on an annual basis.
