Roles and Responsibilities :

  • Conducts thorough investigation of all assigned claims by analyzing information and evidence with maximum accuracy and efficiency from all relevant parties, regarding claims and legal actions filed against NJ TRANSIT.

  • Assists defense counsel in all facets of trial preparation to affect a successful resolution of litigated cases.

  • Utilizes knowledge, experience and judgement to assess the value of the case. Initiates and conducts negotiations with claimant and claimant’s attorney.

  • Develops, reviews and interprets contracts to ensure the assets of NJ TRANSIT are protected and controlled.

  • Receives, organizes and interprets medical and technical documentation. Consults and corresponds with medical and other professionals. Determines and selects appropriate experts, i.e., medical, economists, accident reconstruction specialists, engineers, etc. to provide a cost-effective defense of NJ TRANSIT’s assets.

  • Analyzes, audits and approves payment of medical bills and expenses associated with claims and litigated cases.

  • Determines and establishes liability reserves and prepares monthly reports.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and three (3) years of experience in investigating, evaluating and settling claims.

  • Knowledge of N.J.S.A. Title 59 (New Jersey Tort Claims Act) and/or Federal Employers’ Liability Act (FELA), as well as other applicable laws and insurance procedures related to claims administration.

  • Investigation skills, negotiation skills, oral and written communication skills, the ability to analyze, summarize, and organize large amounts of information to create concise recommendations and reports.

  • Working knowledge of medical and legal terminology.

  • Working knowledge of railroad operations desired.

  • The ability to work with computer programs and a claims system.
