University of Rochester Lactation Consultant Non-Nurse in Rochester, New York

GENERAL PURPOSE:

The IBCLC works within a team of healthcare providers, nurses and staff to provide comprehensive promotion, protection and support of lactation for the parent/infant dyad consistent with the overall healthcare goals and treatment plans of patients and families.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Perform comprehensive maternal, child and feeding assessments related to lactation.

  2. Manage lactation. The IBCLC may use the individualized feeding plan which has been provided to the healthcare team in order to:

a. Suggest expertise and evidence-based practices that will improve a patient's outcomes

b. Evaluate and manage ineffective latch and/or pumping skills

c. Recommend over-the-counter nipple treatments

d. Refer to higher levels of care as determined by the IBCLCs expertise

  1. Educate about lactation:

a. Providing evidence-based information to the primary healthcare team concerning medications, substances and complementary therapies and their impact on lactation and infant health

b. Providing evidence-based information to parents regarding:

i. Management of lactation prenatally and postpartum

ii. Donor milk, milk sharing, co-feeding and other sharing practices

iii. Providing appropriate, evidence-based and supportive education to health care providers, students and staff either on particular cases, as a preceptor, or in a lecture/lesson setting

  1. Advise on goal-formation. The IBCLC must be an expert in, and able to advise on:

a. The cultural, psychosocial and nutritional aspects of lactation

b. Support and encouragement to enable patients to successfully meet their lactation goals

c. Effective counselling and communication skills when interacting with patients and other health care providers

d. Using the principles of family-centered care while maintaining a collaborative, supportive relationship with patients and healthcare providers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

2 or 4 year college-level education required. 2 years of lactation related experience required or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required knowledge, skills and abilities: Good computer skills and abilities to quickly document; effective interpersonal communication skills; clear understanding of various roles and scope of practice in medical contexts; ability to incorporate, and if needed reframe lactation goals with the medical and psychosocial needs of the family taken into account. IBCLC (International Board of Lactation Consultants Examiners) required.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $ 21.57 - $ 29.12 Hourly

The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations.
